How to know what clothes to spend money on

How to know what clothes to spend money on | Fashion and shopping tips from an online personal stylist: how to dress better for your body type, dress better for work, dress better for dates, and improve your personal style and confidence.

If you’re over gluttonous consumption or looking to buy less, but higher quality clothes, how do you know what’s worth your cheddar? It’s overwhelming with all the clothing options out there.

(Even savvy shoppers can sometimes get hoodwinked by badly stitched, nicely designed, $600 polyester blends.)

Below are two things you can do to figure out what clothes to splurge on.

What clothes to splurge on

1. Research brands and read product reviews

There’s plenty of information available to help decide how certain denim wears compared to Levi’s. Although, that’s just one item (jeans) - not an entire wardrobe.

  • Read the comments on the brand’s social media pages.

  • Read reviews on retailer’s websites.

  • Ask your friends what they buy.

  • Read the history of the brand and how they manufacturer.

2. Trial and Error

Organically experience the difference between better vs crap clothes and learn how to make better choices over time. Trying new clothes and shopping at various brands and designers is the ideal way to discern.

That’s it!

The two best ways.

That’s how I learned and became an expert stylist. I studied hundreds of brands. I didn't grow up knowing this stuff. I shopped at whatever was cheapest like most ill-advised young shoppers.

It’s been a near-decade of shopping professionally & being exposed to so many types of retail that has developed my expertise. While working at NET-A-PORTER for ex, designers from Chloè to Fred Leighton came in to show each collection, talking us through the details. I learned the history of brands, how manufacturing worked and what made a brand special.

Even working for J.Crew during its heyday made me more privy to the quality’s decline (*insert tears*)!

Now, after all that experience, I'm like a huntress who can smell fab cashmere buried in a rubbish-filled sale bin.

You need a trained eye to make smart shopping choices. Can you get better at it? Of course!

It's like all things: be patient, invest a ton of time, make mistakes, and as with everything else, try to do better.

BUT!
